The social media platform Xowned by billionaire Elon Musk, will present documents requested by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and will ask by next Monday for the service to be reestablished in Brazil, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.
Access to the platform, formerly known as Twitter, has been blocked in Brazil since late August, following an order from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. The judge and the U.S. technology company have been at odds over the investigation into so-called “digital militias,” which Moraes claims have spread hate messages in Brazil through social media.
The dispute led X to close its offices in the country and fire employees, including its legal representative, violating a Brazilian law that requires the presence of a legal representative of the company in the country.
The platform could be available again to Brazilians as early as next week, after X provides court-requested documents proving it now has a legal representative, sources familiar with X's plans said.
The social network and the Supreme Court did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
Last week, X's lawyers stated that the company had appointed a legal representative in Brazil, as determined by the STF, but initially did not provide documents proving that the appointee was formally able to respond for the company.
Once the new set of documents has been sent to the Supreme Court, the company expects the issue to be resolved, according to the sources.
The sources said the platform has also begun complying with other court demands, such as blocking profiles of people allegedly spreading fake news and paying a fine of 18 million reais through accounts of X and Starlink, another Musk company.
The social media company is interested in smoothing over its relationship with Moraes and operating like any other technology company in the country, one of the sources said.
