This Sunday (6) the first round of elections municipal elections of 2024, in which voters define the mayors and councilors of Brazilian cities.
Those elected will take over from next year. And the question arises: what will be the value of the salaries of mayors and councilors? The answer is “it depends”. There is no fixed amount, as this is defined by the City Council of each city, taking into account the size and revenue of the municipality.
However, it is worth remembering that salaries for public positions are subject to the public service ceiling, which cannot exceed the salary of ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Currently, this value is R$44,008.52.
According to city Transparency Portals, among the capitals, the highest salary goes to the mayor of São Paulo, where the value is R$38,039.38. Teresina has the lowest value, at R$17,690.57.
On the councilors' side, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador lead with salaries of R$24,754.79. At the other end, Vitória appears with a value of R$8,966.26.
In addition to the gross salary, municipalities can also offer other benefits such as security, office funding, official vehicles, among others.
