Is Daylight Saving Time returning this year?
The debate over the return of daylight saving time in Brazil has been gaining momentum. According to the National Electric System Operator (ONS), the reintroduction of this measure could reduce electricity demand at night by up to 2.9%in addition to postponing peak energy consumption by up to two hours.
The ONS also highlights that the adoption of daylight saving time would bring significant savings in thermoelectric generation costs, estimated at between R$244 million and R$356 million.
According to Matheus Spiess, analyst at Empiricus Researchtherefore, the measure could considerably alleviate operating costs during the months of October to February.
However, the final decision rests with the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), which has not yet defined when the measure will be announced
“Despite the benefits identified, the possible return of daylight saving time has raised concerns in the airline industry. Associations representing airlines have asked the federal government to establish a minimum period of 180 days between the publication of the decree and its effective implementation,” he points out.
According to the analyst, they warn that an abrupt change could cause changes in flight schedules, especially in cities that would not adopt the time change, causing delays and possible loss of connections.
“Therefore, even if the decision is made in 2024, it is likely that daylight saving time will only come into effect in 2025, so that all parties have adequate time to adjust to the new reality,” he concludes.
