Israel and the Hezbollah exchanged fire on Sunday (22), with Israeli warplanes carrying out the most intense bombing in almost a year of conflict in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah firing rockets towards northern Israel.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said the strikes would continue until it was safe for evacuees in the north to return — setting the stage for a long conflict as Hezbollah has vowed to fight until a ceasefire in the Gaza war.

“In recent days, we have dealt Hezbollah a series of blows that they never imagined,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a video statement.

“If Hezbollah doesn’t get the message, I promise you that it will get the message.”

The conflict — which has escalated dramatically in the past week — has been intensifying since Hezbollah opened a second front against Israel, saying it was acting in solidarity with Palestinians facing a major Israeli offensive in southern Gaza.

The Israeli military said it struck about 290 targets on Saturday, including thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers, and would continue to hit more targets.
